Masters of Photography - Elliott Erwitt

When you are interviews and descriptions of famous photographers and masters of of photography we mostly dealing with high interpretation of feelings, some transcendental idea and "high purpose" for which one photography is the right tool.
Elliott Erwitt work is very refreshing in this matter.

When I look at Elliott Erwitt face I see a big child, who purpose is to make a smile on faces of people watching his pictures. His pictures could be sensational as a post cards, posters or computer wallpapers, though they seem to have more content then you would originally think.

Erwitt likes to build situational humor, where he makes object come alive, he is giving animals human features only thanks to the right framing and capturing the right moment. All that thanks to the incredibile sense of the moment that he is having. He is using universal symbols to achieve all that and regardless of age and situation, it always evokes at least a shadow of a smile on viewers face.

Eliot Erwitt will be 89 yo this year, born in Paris, but before II World War when he was 10, he moved with his family to USA. Studied in Los Angeles City Collage and New School for Social Research till 1950 and 3 years later he joined Magnum Photos Agency.

Elliott Erwitt quotes:

  • “I’ll always be an amateur photographer.” – Elliott Erwitt
  • “I’m not a serious photographer like many of my contemporaries. That is to say, I am serious about not being serious.” – Elliott Erwitt
  • “Making pictures is a very simple act. There is no great secret in photography…schools are a bunch of crap. You just need practice and application of what you’ve learned. My absolute conviction is that if you are working reasonably well the only important thing is to keep shooting…it doesn’t matter whether you are making money or not. Keep working, because as you go through the process of working things begin to happen.” – Elliott Erwitt
  • “Photography is pretty simple stuff. You just react to what you see, and take many, many pictures.” – Elliott Erwitt
  • “To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place…. I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” – Elliott Erwitt
  • “After following the crowd for a while, I’d then go 180 degrees in the exact opposite direction. It always worked for me, but then again, I’m very lucky.” – Elliott Erwitt
